THE GREAT SIN - ADULTERY
“It would be a great sin against God.” Genesis 39:9
“It would be a great sin against God.” Genesis 39:9
What does God call a great sin? You would not guess, because little is thought about this sin. Believers and unbelievers commit this sin as if it were a way of life.
Marriage is important in God's sight. God created male and female that together they are in His image (Genesis 1:27). Man was to leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. The two are united into one.
The first miracle of Jesus was at a wedding. This reveals the importance God places on marriage. Malachi 2:15 states: “Did not God make you one with your wife that He might have godly children from the union?"
The Scripture is very clear about the sin of adultery. Leviticus 20:10 says, “The man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, he who commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, the adulterer and his adulteress should be put to death.”
Before the Law was given to Moses, adultery was considered a GREAT SIN:
- Abraham deceived King Abimelech by allowing him to take Sarah to be his wife, saying she was his sister. Before King Abimelech slept with her, God warned him and said, “I kept you from sinning against Me.” Gen.20:6.
King Abimelech called Abraham and asked: “What have you done to us? What crime have I committed that deserves treatment like this, making me and my Kingdom guilty of this great sin?” Gen. 20:9
- Isaac deceived Abimelech by telling his men that Rebekah was his sister. King Abimelech saw Isaac caressing Rebekah and realized she was Isaac’s wife.
He asked Isaac: “How could you do this to us? One of my people might easily have taken your wife and slept with her, and you would have made us guilty of great sin.” Gen 26:7-10,
- Joseph refused to commit adultery with Potipar’s wife, who asked him to sleep with her. Joseph stated: “How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.” Gen 39:6-9
May we agree with God that this is a great sin and tell individuals what God thinks.
