"THE MYSTERY IN PRAYER"

Pray With Lifted Hands

Is the charge to pray with lifted hands charismatic teaching or biblical instructions? How can lifted hands affect prayer? This is a mystery. The Scriptures provide much information about the lifting up of hands in prayer.
The first Scripture concerning lifted hands is found in Genesis 14:22 where Abram tells the King of Sodom that he had lifted up his "hand unto the Lord, the Most High God, the possessor of heaven and earth." He won the battle against five kings.

Moses continually lifted his hands. Exodus 9:29 "And Moses said unto him, as soon as I am gone out of the city I will spread abroad my hands unto the Lord; and the thunder shall cease, neither shall there be any more hail; that you might know now that the earth is the Lord's", and Exodus 14:15-16 "And the Lord said unto Moses why cry to me?  Speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward; but lift up your rod and stretch out your hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea." They crossed the red sea on ground ground.

King Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the congregation of Israel; and spread forth his hands. After he finished praying "fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the Lord filled the house" (2 Chronicles 6:12-7:1). Would you like to experience the glory of God?

The Psalms gives many accounts of lifted hands. Here are two Scriptures: Psalm 28:2 "Hear the voice of my supplication, when I cry unto thee, when I lift up my hands towards the holy oracle;" and Psalm 134:2 "Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and bless the Lord."

The Lord instructed Joshua to stretch out the spear that was in his hand towards Ai that He might give him the city. Joshua 8:26 states: "For Joshua drew not his hand back wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai."

Jesus led the disciples out to Bethany and lifted up his hands, and blessed them (Luke 24:50). And in 1 Timothy 2:8, Paul instructs men to pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

The results that are derived from the position of the hands during prayer can result in victory or defeat. Moses led this at Rephidim, because when his hands were down the Amalekites were winning and when his hand were up, Joshua and his men were winning (Exodus 18:8-17). Determine the position of your hands during prayer. You may be amazed at the results. It is not in the understanding of this mystery, it is in the doing.  JOIN THE VICTORS!
